The Hub of Prosperity

The Hub of Prosperity is a 5-acre urban farm run by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Agroecology Program at the First United Methodist Church in Edinburg. Founded in 2019, the Hub aims to be a community resource for sustainable agriculture research and education.

We offer paid work opportunities to UTRGV students interested in sustainable agriculture careers, serve as a living laboratory for UTRGV courses in agroecology, sustainable agriculture, plant pathology, and integrated pest management, conduct research on soil health management, beneficial insects, organic weed management, and crop disease resistance, and recently launched a 20-member community garden.

The Hub’s name was inspired by an early 1900s advertisement for RGV agriculture that says “The Hub of Prosperity never ceases to revolve in Hidalgo County where the practical and energetic farmer can work 12 months in the year.” The ad includes a vegetable wheel showing what crops can be harvested each month of the year. We pay tribute to the agricultural roots of the Rio Grande Valley while acknowledging that some past and present agricultural practices have not always served the Valley’s land or its people well. The Hub strives to support a healthy, sustainable, and resilient food system for all the residents of our region.

We have a weekly farm stand on Saturday mornings 9-11 am on the farm at Mon Mack Road and University Dr. and welcome visitors and volunteers. Get in touch through our social media or email [email protected]!
